About Annika
I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist based in London, UK, with more than 20 years of clinical experience. Since qualifying in 2004, I have specialised in the treatment of gambling addiction, while also working extensively with behavioural addictions, substance misuse, anxiety disorders, stress, and relationship difficulties.
Over the course of my career, I have worked across NHS services, community settings, private hospitals, and private practice. In 2010, I joined the National Problem Gambling Clinic in London as one of its first clinicians, helping to shape specialist treatment services for those affected by gambling-related harm. I subsequently spent a few years running treatment programmes within Westminster homeless shelters for individuals struggling with severe gambling addiction.
In 2012, I established a CBT clinic for staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital- an in-demand initiative that has since grown into a well-established part of the occupational health provision for the trust.
Alongside my clinical work, I have contributed to academic research on metacognitions and problem gambling and have authored book chapters on the treatment of gambling addiction. I have lectured both in the UK and internationally, and regularly speak at conferences on topics including gambling prevention and harm reduction, stress management, workplace wellbeing, and substance misuse in occupational settings.
I currently serve as a Trustee on the Board of Gordon Moody Association, the UK’s specialist residential gambling treatment charity, where I support the organisation in providing high-quality care for those most severely impacted by gambling addiction.
Outside of private practice, I work as an expert rater for Mindway AI, an artificial intelligence company specialising in the early detection and prevention of problem gambling.
At the heart of my work is the therapeutic relationship. I pride myself on connecting with clients through compassion, honesty, and warmth, while using humour appropriately to make complex psychological concepts feel accessible and relatable. My years in practice have taught me that meaningful change is always possible with the right support, and I remain deeply passionate about helping people navigate life’s challenges and move towards healthier, more fulfilling lives.
